Taiwanese Semiconductor Market to Grow 7.8% in 2014: MIC

According to MIC (Market Intelligence and Consulting Institute), an ICT industry research institute based in Taipei, the worldwide semiconductor market will reach around US$310.4 billion in 2014, up 3.8% year on year, thanks to the continuous growth in smart handheld devices. Despite a slowdown in growth momentum owing to the fierce competition in 28nm process technology and the decline in chip prices, Taiwanese semiconductor industry is projected to see a stronger growth than the global average in 2014, growing 7.8% year on year to reach around NT$1.9 trillion (US$64.2 billion; US$1=NT$29.511).

MIC estimates that the global semiconductor market will rebound to US$299.0 billion in 2013, up 2.4% from 2012, mainly due to the growth in smart handheld devices such as smartphones and tablets. With the recovery in global economy in 2014, the decline in worldwide PC industry is expected to be alleviated. Despite a weaker growth momentum, the smart handheld device industry is expected to retain a two-digit percentage growth in 2014, leading to a continuous expansion of the worldwide semiconductor market.
According to MIC's Consultant and Research Director Chris Hung, as mid-range and value line smart handheld devices, touch control notebook PCs, and 4K2K TV panels begin shipment in the second half of 2013, IC design companies will launch related products in line with the mass production of their customers' products, thereby boosting vendors' revenues from application processors, display driver ICs, and touch control ICs. Moreover, the rise of wearable devices, such as smart watches and glasses, is anticipated to create the need for multi-chip packaging and diversified specifications, bolstering the growth of IC packaging and testing service providers.
